The states of California, Utah, Nevada and Colorado are teeming with breathtaking natural creations and this small group adventure sets out to explore them in earnest. After California’s ‘city by the bay’, where a visit to the island prison of Alcatraz is included, Monterey is next - a coastal city that breathes the ocean and where the marine life that calls it home exists in incredible numbers. Travelling inland, our attention turns to an endless supply of awe-inspiring national parks: including California’s Yosemite, where we take a ride on the historic Sugar Pine Railroad; formidable Death Valley; plus Utah’s Monument Valley and its National Parks of Zion, Bryce Canyon, Arches, Canyonlands and Capitol Reef, all with their own unique attributes. Colorado’s Mesa Verde is also included on this journey that stays in great hotels, some of which are superbly located close to the magnificent parks, and a two-night stay in Nevada’s lively city of Las Vegas provides the perfect opportunity for an optional flight to perhaps America’s most iconic natural site - the Grand Canyon.

Titan’s VIP door-to-door travel service collects you from home, for your journey to London Heathrow Airport for a direct, scheduled Virgin Atlantic flight to San Francisco. On arrival we transfer to the Hotel Zelos (4T).
Wake in the characterful city of San Francisco, where a guided morning tour takes in the highlights including Chinatown, Pier 39, Fisherman’s Wharf and Golden Gate Bridge. We also visit Alcatraz, San Francisco’s infamous former maximum-security prison completely isolated on a small island. We cross the Bay to explore this notorious site that housed some of America’s most dangerous criminals between the 1930s and 1960s, including Al Capone and George ‘Machine Gun’ Kelly. The afternoon is free to explore or join an optional excursion.
We head south along the coast to Carmel-by-the-Sea, for time to explore this former artists’ haven, then continue to Monterey and the Hotel Pacific (4T). Monterey Bay has made a miraculous recovery from overfishing and pollution, to become home to a wealth of wildlife.
We take to the sea in search of some of the world’s largest creatures - a number of species of whales make Monterey their seasonal home and we may be lucky enough to spot humpback or blue whales, plus Orcas, Risso’s dolphins, harbour seals and sea otters. This afternoon is free and you may like to learn more about the city’s history in Cannery Row, visit the world-renowned Monterey Bay Aquarium, or enjoy dinner at one of the fish restaurants on Fisherman’s Wharf.
We journey to one of America’s greatest areas of unspoilt natural beauty, California’s Yosemite National Park, occupied by crystal clear lakes, breathtaking mountains and dense forested areas. We check into The Pines Resort (4T) nestled on the shores of Bass Lake just outside the park itself.
We board the historic Madera Sugar Pine Railroad, to travel through the beautiful Sierra National Forest. From the late 19th century to the 1930s, the historic railroad carried lumber to the town of Madera and as we ride aboard the train, the conductor will tell its story and explain the surrounding flora and fauna. We then travel to Mammoth Lakes, a charming town located high in the mountains. Our hotel is the Westin Monache Resort (4T).
Our adventure takes us to the USA’s hottest, driest and lowest national park - Death Valley; a land of extreme contrasts. We cross into Nevada, travelling to Las Vegas, where dazzling lights, luxurious hotels, fine restaurants, lavish water fountains, and endless excitement dominate the city. We check in to the SLS Las Vegas (4T). Please note: Death Valley is subject to weather conditions and suitable temperatures and a visit may not be possible.
Today is free to try your luck in casinos along the seven-mile Strip, visit Fremont Street to see a bit of the city’s history, or experience the breathtaking Grand Canyon, on an optional flight to the South Rim - a sight not to be missed.
The lands that form Utah’s first national park, Zion, are thought to have been first utilised 8,000 years ago by small groups of humans. Native American history, cascading waterfalls, breathtaking deep-red canyons, mystical natural arches, flowing rivers, beautiful woodland, and captivating mountains fill its 229-square mile area. During our visit, we can choose the walking opportunities available - perhaps the Temple of Sinawawa, a paved trail following the Virgin River through magnificent narrow sandstone canyons; or a journey that links the Grotto picnic area to Zion Lodge with outstanding viewpoints along the way. We stay overnight at La Quinta Inn & Suites (3T) in Springdale, located just outside the park and nestled amongst the red rock.
In Bryce Canyon National Park, surreal landscapes of sandstone pillars known as hoodoos rise from the ground in red, orange and white alongside breathtaking natural sandstone arches. We travel through, stopping often to view the spectacular scenery. We stay at the Best Western Plus Bryce Canyon Grand Hotel (3T) or Best Western Ruby’s Inn (3T).
Today may stir memories of many Hollywood films, as we reach Monument Valley and enjoy a discovery tour of these sacred Native Indian lands. We stay at the renowned Goulding’s Lodge (3T), a property with an outstanding location and history and also where we enjoy a cookout dinner.
Continuing to Utah, we stop at historic Bluff Fort to learn of the first Anglo settlement here in 1880, by Mormon pioneers who had made the arduous journey over the Hole-in-the Rock trail. We continue into Colorado and to Mesa Verde National Park to visit some of the archaeological sites of the Ancestral Puebloans, including the spectacular cliff dwellings of Mesa Verde that were constructed during the late 12th to 13th centuries. We return to Utah and our hotel in the centre of downtown Moab, the Homewood Suites by Hilton (3T).
Two more breathtaking national parks are on our agenda today. Arches National Park is a ‘red rock wonderland’, with soaring pinnacles, giant balanced rocks, and over 2,000 natural stone arches including Delicate Arch. Canyonlands National Park is a stunning area of innumerable canyons, mesas, and buttes that have been created through erosion by the Green and Colorado rivers and their tributaries.
From Moab we head west to Utah’s Capitol Reef National Park, located in the Waterpocket Fold - a geological monocline or ‘wrinkle’ on the earth. One of Utah’s treasures, it is home to mighty cliffs, impressive canyons, domes, and bridges. Our accommodation is the Capitol Reef Resort (3T) in Torrey, close to the park and providing fabulous views from the hotel’s grounds. If the skies are clear tonight, you may glimpse the Milky Way.
