Day 1
Arrive Antananarivo
On arrival in the hilly Malagasy capital you’re welcomed by our A&K representative. You will be transferred to your hotel in the embassy district of Haute-Ville (Upper Town). This part of the city is a tangled assortment of steep, partly cobbled streets, red-tiled roofs, and pastel-coloured houses, with a lovely cool climate. After a relaxing afternoon, your guest host, Dr Charlie Gardner, will introduce himself and give you a briefing on the adventure ahead over welcome drinks and dinner in the hotel.

Days 2-4
Andasibe
Enjoy three days watching the island’s unique wildlife. Head to Andasibe, a rainforest comprising Périnet Special Reserve and Mantadia National Park. Spot the indri – the largest lemur, which cannot survive in captivity – along with 11 other species, including the fat-tailed dwarf lemur. Birdwatchers can observe the velvet asity and nuthatch vanga. The reserve is also home to reptiles and more than 1,000 orchid species. Visit Mitsinjo Forest Reserve to take part in a planting programme and head to Lemur Island where four species are protected.

Day 5
Antananarivo
Return to the capital to explore the Upper Town with your guide. Visit the Queen’s Palace, locally referred to as the Rova, which crowns the highest hill in the city. The resting place of the country’s monarchs, you can explore this fortified structure designed for Queen Ranavalona I by Scottish missionary James Cameron. Round off your tour with a stop at the newly built photography museum showcasing the everyday life of the Malagasy people. Learn more about the history of ‘the city of the thousand’, a name referring to the soldiers who once guarded it.

Days 6-8
Ifotaka
Take a private flight south to Mandrare River Camp, close to where the fascinating Antandroy tribe lives. The next three days are spent on a journey of discovery. Enjoy seeing the entwined branches of the octopus tree while walking in the Sacred Spiny Forest. Visit a local village, and enjoy a sundowner. Depending on water levels, walk or take a boat across the river to the Sacred Gallery Forest, home to the ring-tailed and Verreaux sifaka lemur. Observe the nocturnal creatures on a night walk through the Forest of Zenavo.

Day 9
Manafiafy Beach
Today, fly to Fort Dauphin on a private charter flight and travel north to Manafiafy Beach. This secluded tropical paradise, also known as Sainte Luce, is a beautiful sandy bay, fringed with forest-covered mountains and wildlife-rich mangroves. Enjoy time at leisure for a swim and sundowner overlooking the bay.

Days 10 & 11
Manafiafy Beach
Enjoy two days to kick back in this barefoot paradise. Your lodge offers easy access to nature and a wide range of sporting activities, which are all included. Wildlife-watching options encompass guided day and night walks in the rainforest, snorkelling in the bay and nearby cove, kayaking, and scenic boat trips to the mangroves and a whale-watching tower (humpback whale pass between July and September). Enjoy boat rides to nearby islands for picnics and trips to the local village, supported by the lodge. Toast your adventure with a sumptuous dinner on the beach.
