Arrive Santiago, Chile
Land in Chile’s capital where you’ll be met and taken to your hotel. After checking in, head to the glass-roofed spa to soak up the city skyline and views of the Andes. Itchy feet? Head straight out to wander around attractive neoclassical architecture and myriad eateries.
Today, Design your Day® – giving you the freedom to choose the experience that is best suited to you. Select from the following options:
Option 1: See some street art
Santiago’s streets have been a graffiti hot spot for some time. From Barrio Brasil to the Bellavista district you’ll see abstract designs plus anime, as well as more politically motivated works.
Option 2: Go in search of local eats
Santiago is a cornucopia of hip eateries and street food stalls. Visit La Vega, a market loaded with indigenous fruit and veg, and Mercado Central for some of Santiago’s best seafood.
Option 3: Have a morning of museums
Visit the Chilean Museum of Pre-Columbian Art, boasting the country’s important pre-Hispanic works. Then the stately Chilean National Museum of Fine Arts to see 19th-century sculptures. Finish at La Chascona, one of Pablo Neruda’s three homes.
Option 4: Take a bike tour
Pedal around the bohemian neighbourhood of Bellavista, where you can soak up its outdoor graffiti. Stop at the bustling markets for tapas and cycle through the pretty Parque Forestal.
Santiago – Puerto Natales
This morning you’ll be driven to the airport for your flight south to Punta Arenas. Your driver-guide will then take you three hours across the vast Patagonian pampas. Your hotel sits on the outskirts of Puerto Natales, a port city and the gateway to Patagonia’s wilderness. Perched on the lake, you can take in mountain views from every angle. Watch chefs fire up the grill for a rustic asado and treat yourself to a glass of carménère.
Days 4 & 5
Spend the next couple of days venturing through landscapes that inspired Pablo Neruda and Bruce Chatwin. Kayak on serene fjords where you may spot a Chilean flamingo or black-necked swan. Or sail to the great Balmaceda glacier to witness radiant blue icebergs. There are trails for the hardcore trekker, and scenic routes for the ambler, with miles of lenga forest to explore. You’ll find old-world estancias used by 19th-century pioneers as well as life-changing lookout points. Peckish? Take a delicious picnic to one of the lagoons.
Puerto Natales – Santiago
Take the morning to relax or squeeze in a hike along the Last Hope Sound. In the early afternoon, a driver will take you to the airport for your flight back to Santiago. This time your hotel is a convenient stone’s throw away from the airport so you can bunk down in a matter of minutes.
Santiago – San Pedro de Atacama
Walk over to the airport for your flight to Calama in the north. You’ll be met and driven to the outskirts of San Pedro de Atacama, an oasis town in the Chilean desert. Your hotel sits tucked away in the rust-coloured hills of the Catarpe Valley, an otherworldly landscape which you can admire from the pool.
Days 8 & 9
San Pedro de Atacama
Explore Chile’s Atacama Desert, a lunar-like terrain of salt-rich mountains and tangerine desertscape. It’s the driest desert on Earth, affording spectacular scenery from dusk until dawn. Visit the salt flats, where you may spot a pink flamingo, or hike to high-altitude lagoons. You can trek up to the bubbling geysers at El Tatio and enjoy a picnic with volcano views. In the evening, watch the amber sun melt over the salt lakes. You can embark on moonlit walks and go stargazing in the clearest skies with a professional telescope.
A driver will take you to Calama airport from where you’ll depart.
You will have the option to book your own flights independently with the operator.
