Where better to begin our journey through South West France than in Atlantic Ocean-fringed Arcachon Bay? After stopping to see the Great Dune of Pilat – Europe’s highest sand dune – we’ll get our first taste of coastal cuisine with fresh oysters and a glass of local wine from one of the port’s traditional cabins. To round off our first day, we’ll gather together in Biarritz for a welcome dinner. (D)

Today we’ll indulge our cultural sides in Bayonne, a true cultural art and history hub just a short drive from Biarritz. We’ll visit a traditional Bayonne ham museum and indulge in a ham tasting over a glass of wine before returning to Biarritz together. (B)

Today we’ll turn to the east and briefly on to beautiful Pau. We’ll then travel onwards through the Midi-Pyrénées region, pausing en route at the spiritual town of Lourdes. In keeping with the spirit of our surroundings, we’ll check in to comfortable rustic accommodation before tucking into dinner. (B,D)

Following the trail of knights, we’ll continue our own crusade through the Midi-Pyrénées and past picture-perfect Bastides. After passing through Cathar country, we’ll visit a local winery and enjoy a glass of the region’s speciality – a sparkling Blanquette. Our final stop of the day will be Carcassonne, where we’ll enjoy a group dinner. (B,D)

Today you’ll be free to discover Carcassonne’s chivalric secrets at your own pace. (B)

Historic Albi will be this morning’s first stop. After an included visit to the town museum, we’ll move on to the town of Sarlat in the Dordogne, where we’ll check in to our hotel for the night. (B)

Today our travels through the Dordogne will take in the prehistoric paintings of Lascaux Cave and the pretty Les Eyzies village. We’ll then follow the ‘Royal Road’, winding between craggy rocks and flowing rivers until we get to a local truffle farm, where local guides will give us an exclusive lesson in seeking out the rare delicacies. After returning to Sarlat, the night will be yours to enjoy at your own pace. (B)

On the itinerary today: a stroll through stunning Sarlat, followed by a delightful visit to the riverside town of Beynac-et-Cazenac and its magnificent medieval château. Afterwards, we’ll return to Sarlat to enjoy our last meal together. (B,D)

We’ll spend the final day of our tour in Saint-Émilion, where we’ll have a chance to sample some of the region’s ‘heavy reds’ and say a final ‘santé’. We’ll then move on to Bordeaux, where our tour will end. (B)
