History and geography conspired to make Transylvania in central Romania one of Europe’s most beautifully wild and fascinating regions. For centuries the locals have existed in harmony with a variety of wildlife, including Europe’s highest concentration of wolves, lynx and bears – almost half the European population of Brown bears is recorded in the Carpathian Mountains. Meanwhile, dense forests have remained largely untouched. Our days are spent on walks through spectacular canyons, virgin forests and Saxon villages. We go in search of Brown bears and explore the mediaeval town of Brasov as well as Bran castle, best known as the residence of Count Dracula.

Highlights
  • See Brown bears from a hide
  • Have a unique opportunity to observe a great variety of wildlife in its natural environment
  • Hike through meadows, forests and along mountain trails
  • Stay in comfortable private guesthouse providing an authentic Carpathian experience and a very warm welcome
  • Discover one of the last remaining wilderness areas in Europe
Food

All breakfasts, 6 lunches and 6 dinners are included during our stay. Meals are a mixture of fresh local produce and Romanian/Transylvanian specialities. Transylvanian cuisine contains different dishes and is influenced by several traditions and cultures (German, Hungarian and Romanian cuisine) but still maintains its own distinct character with a love for homemade cooking. Soups are a staple and much loved dish, main meals tend to be hearty with a strong focus on local produce and desserts are varied and plentiful. Breakfasts usually consist of a small buffet including an egg dish, cold cuts, cheeses, boiled eggs, vegetables, spreads, bread, yoghurt, cereals, jam, juice, herbal teas and coffee. Lunches included on this trip will usually consist of self-made sandwiches, and you can choose your own fillings from the buffet in the mornings. Each evening there is a choice of a meat dish or vegetarian option. Dinner on the first evening is typically a light snack due to the late arrival of the group. On one evening we enjoy dinner in a typical Romanian restaurant in Brasov. This meal is not included and you should allow approximately 25EUR (without drinks) for this. Vegetarian and special diets can be catered for, but options can be limited throughout Romania –please inform the office of any specific requirements upon booking.

The start hotel is approximately 165km from the airport and will take around three hours to reach by road. Therefore, we highly recommend you wait for the group at the airport and join the group transfer. On arrival of the group flight at Bucharest Airport we are transferred by minibus to our private guesthouse at the foot of the Carpathian Mountains. Food and refreshments will be served during the transfer. Our guesthouse is situated in the quaint village of Magura at 1020m and within the boundaries of the Piatra Craiului National Park.

After breakfast we spend the day walking around the area surrounding the unique Kalibash villages of Magura and Pestera, where the houses are built along the mountain ridges with deep ravines and valleys in between. We visit these traditional houses and learn about the history of the settlements, which were built against the mediaeval invasions of Mongols, Tartars and Turks. Near Pestera we visit a bat cave, home to five separate species of bats (though not found year-round). Make sure to bring a good torch with you!

Location: Barza

Today we travel the traditional way as horse-drawn carts take us into Barza Valley, a long valley stretching along the Barsa River. As we make our way slowly through the valley we can enjoy the spectacular view to Piatra Craiului Mountain and the dispersed settlement of Poiana Marului. We leave the horse-drawn carts and hike through the hay meadows uphill to a hermitage in the rocks where we have lunch and enjoy the tea made by monks from herbs picked in the meadows. This evening, those who want can take the opportunity to go Brown bear watching. A forester will take us to a safe hide deep in the forest. The hides are managed by the forestry commission and access is dependent on their permission which is why it is organised and paid for locally. Not being able to get access to the hides is extremely rare. *Villa Hermani Guesthouse*

Setting off from Magura, we hike up to the alpine pastures. From here we can see the 25km ridge of Piatra Craiului as we enjoy the calm of the area. The silence is broken only by the bells of cows and sheep that are brought to these high pastures in summer to graze. We return to Magura in the afternoon.

Today we explore Postavarul Mountain, a well-known ski area in Romania during the winter and fantastic place for hiking in the summer. After breakfast, we set off from Magura to Postavarul Mountain. On arrival, we take the cable car up to Postavarul peak at 1,727 metres and continue to climb up to 1799m. At the top, we are welcomed with fantastic panoramic views over the whole region. Our walk continues down through Postarvarul Nature reserve towards the old Romanian quarters of Brasov. The trail is varied and will lead us over alpine meadows and through mixed forests (mainly beechwood and spruce) until we reach Piata Unirii the main square in Brasov, home to the Orthodox cathedral and the first Romanian school. From here it is about a 15-minute walk to the medieval historic town centre. After some free time to relax we meet the birder from the Romanian Ornithological Society and Brasov University. He will show us around a UNESCO Ramsar site at the Dumbravita lakes (near Brasov). In the evening we return to Magura for dinner.  Please note: /At times the cable car may be closed due to high winds and the road may be closed. In this case, we will hike along an alternative high alpine trail in the region.

Location: Bran Castle, Brașov

Today we uncover Transylvanian culture at its best! After breakfast we drive to Bran Castle, also known as Dracula’s Castle. This impressive fortress was built on the border to Wallachia where Vlad Tepes (also known as Vlad the Impaler), the Duke of Wallachia, once ruled. Vlad, also known as Dracula, was a brutal tyrant and provided inspiration for Bram Stoker’s famous vampire story. Vlad himself never went to Bran Castle, but Bram Stoker saw an image of it and felt it was the perfect setting for his gothic tale. After Transylvania had become part of Romania in 1920, the castle was donated to the Romanian royal family. It became the summer residence of Queen Maria, a granddaughter to Queen Victoria. From Bran Castle, it is less than an hour’s drive to the region's culture and economic heart, Brasov. This mediaeval town has been a melting pot of nations ever since its foundation in the 12th century. We have a guided tour of the town before having some time to explore at leisure.  In the evening we visit a traditional Romanian restaurant in Brasov for dinner (at own expense).

Location: Vulcan

We head down to the valley and visit Libearty, Europe's largest Brown bear sanctuary. Set in 70 hectares of oak and hazel forests, the sanctuary is home to more than 100 rescued bears, many of whom suffered over years in captivity as dancing bears or in circuses. From the Brown bear sanctuary, we go on a gentle hike across meadows to the village of Vulcan. This region, around Brasov, is closely related to the history of the Transylvanian Saxons, settlers who emigrated 800 years ago from the Rhine‐Moselle valleys. Their strong fortified churches have attracted international attention and some of them are listed as UNESCO world heritage sites. Vulcan derives its name from the Slavonic word 'valc', meaning wolf. In Vulcan we will be welcomed with coffee and tea in the yard of the fortified church. The churches in Transylvania were strongly fortified during the Middle Ages when the region was raided a number of times by Mongols and Tartars.

5* Carpathian Mountains Rumania
This was a wonderful holiday in every respect, one that we will remember for many years. The scenery, location, food, company were all great. The villa and it's hosts were superb - could not have been better. Nothing was too much trouble and they were so friendly and helpful. It was fabulous to meet new people and share the experience with them - great fun and exhilarating.

5* Carpathian Walking and Bears
This was our first walking holiday and our first trip with Exodus too, but it hopefully won't be the last of either as we had such a fantastic time. It was just the right mix (for me) of activity and relaxation, and I think the grading of the walking (leisurely/moderate) was spot on. Rural Romania was beautiful, wild, and of another era. The town we visited (Brasov) was pretty, and although I'd vowed the previous day that I never wanted to take another cable car it was worth taking the one in Brasov for the views of the town from beyond the Hollywood style sign.Villa Hermani, our base, felt like home straight away. Katharina and Herman are very gracious hosts. They used to work for the Large Carnivore Project studying wolves, lynx and bears, so have lots of knowledge to share. Katharina gave us lots of info whilst at the bear hide which really added to the experience. The food was lovely, different every night, and plenty of it.

5* Carpathian Walking & Bears
A great week spent walking in the Carpathian mountains in the company of some like-minded people. Villa Hermani was a lovely place to be based, and Katharina was a helpful and friendly host. Rural Romania was stunning and straight from another era. The hikes were varied and took in a range of different scenery (alpine pasture, woodland, gorges...), and the grading of leisurely-moderate was fair. Visits to Brasov, Bran Castle and the Saxon Village provided a nice cultural complement to the walks.

4* Bears Essential
I had not realised before arriving in Magura just how remote, rural and remarkably beautiful Romania could be. The village where we were based is accessibly only via a long, winding unmade road... so get used to leaving modern life behind. In this part of the world people still travel via horse and cart and cut hay with scythes. It was like stepping back into Tudor times. Fortunately, this also means that Europe's largest group of wild brown bears are still able to thrive and going to see them from a hide in the forest was one of the highlights of our trip. There is also plenty of opportunity for hiking, with walks of varying severity on all but one day of the holiday. The views are spectacular - in some parts resembling Switzerland or Austria, in others California and the Rockies. We also took in trips to Bran Castle - to which the Dracula legend has been eagerly attached - and to the delightful city of Brasov.

5* Beauty, as to be found nowhere else.
Waking up every morning to the glorious Autumn colours of the Carpathians is something I will remember for the rest of my life. The beauty of the forests, the splendour of the mountains and the simplicity of the life there is something I never imagined. Granted, I was initially inspired by my interest in the Dracula legend to go but after experiencing the wilderness there, I can honestly say that I fell in love with “the land beyond the forest”.

4* Carpathian Walking and Bears
A most excellent holiday led by Thomas, who was an knowledgeable guide, and who adjusted the walks according to the group ability and the temperature which was in the mid 30s Centigrade. Walking in such temperatures and at such altitudes can be challenging. Thank goodness for fresh water springs on the hillsides! The guesthouse was well appointed and the food was excellent. An honesty bar came in for much use when we returned from our travels! The major criticism arose when we came to settle our bills at the end of the week as the guesthouse did not take credit cards. This MUST be added to the travellers advice as there is no access to cash machines without a long drive. We only just managed to cobble together enough money by adding £ sterling, Lei and a few dollars which we had fortunately carried.

5* Beautiful........................................
I wasn't sure what to expect of Romania, but was lured by the wildlife I might see. Romania exceeded my expectations in every way- the scenery, the wildlife, the food, the people. The Transylvanian countryside is stunning- serene and peaceful, the rural areas were full of flower meadows and woodland. Cows and sheep grazed with shepherds and their dogs, birds sang as the people hand scythed the first hay harvest of the year. There were few cars on the road so the only ambient noise was the birds, the dogs, the cowbells and the church.

5* Breathtaking
Having been on several Exodus trips before I was unsure of what to expect as I not done any trips as remote as this. Not removed from civilisation but bit on the verge of wilderness. The walks produced breathtaking scenery of the mountains and forests, all conducted at a leisurely pace mainly over unmade paths, meadows or very easy woodland walks, which posed no problems for any of the group.Although not able to see every animal that inhabits the forest there presence was evident. The added option to under the guidance of a local ranger, see the brown bears in the wild is something that should not be missed. This was defiantly a highlight of the trip.

4* Carpathian Walking & Bears
A wonderful holiday based in the beautiful, remote, rural village of Magura. The village is accessed via a long, winding unmade road so get used to a bumpy ride. If you get out of the van immediately after you leave the tarmac it will take approximately 45 - 50 minutes to walk up hill to Villa Hermani through the woods - follow the bright pink paint splodges on rocks or trees. Transylvania is like stepping back in time, where local people still travel via horse and cart and cut hay with scythes, although they will be on their mobiles as mobile signals, 3 & 4G and WiFi are readily available. Romania is home to many European brown bears and seeing them from a hide in the forest was one of the highlights of our trip. In addition to the walking there is a visit to Bran Castle which was given to Queen Maria of Romania in 1918, and to the delightful city of Brasov.

5* Transylvanian experience and hospitality at its finest
I booked this trip primarily to see the bears and enjoy some leisurely walks through the meadows and forests. It exceeded my expectations, mainly due to our guide Thomas, the lovely hosts Herman and Katerina at Villa Hermani and the variety of local experiences from the ride in a horse cart, tea at a hilltop monastery, dinner at a restaurant specialising in game meats, harvesting mushrooms after the rain, and schnapps and cake at a fortified church with an intriguing priest! Transylvania is a beautiful part of the world, still in a time when we were closer to nature where animals are respected and in proximity, shepherds tend the flocks, and the landscape provides a bounty of wildflowers, fruit, hay and mushrooms.

A good introduction to Romania.  The guide was welcoming and approachable and the hotel owner was informative and passionate about the welfare of bears.  The walks were relaxed and allowed exploration of the local area.  There was the feeling that there was a little too much travelling in the minibus, but variety was provided by the walks, visits to towns and waiting patiently for bears to emerge from the woods late at night.

4* Wildlife and hiking
A well paced hiking tour with free time to relax in the remote alpine accommodation, in the mountains of Transylvania. This is certainly the place time forgot with small farming communities farming sheep and cattle, and small orchards aplenty. Dogs are tied up or in the fields protecting the livestock from the bears and other predators. The accommodation is basic but comfortable. We went when the weather was getting cooler and at times it was a little cold in the room. We had to remind the owners to put the heating on, which they did! There were 3 course set meals in the evening that were hearty and consisted of local produce but possibly limited if you are vegetarian/vegan. Don't expect there to be snacks like crisps and chocolate to be available, expect local fruits instead! The guide kept us updated on the itinerary during the week and gave a very informative tour of Brasov and Bran. All in all - a place to get away from it all and enjoy a slower pace of life! It was a very noncommercial region to visit and very refreshing in that sense!

We were extremely lucky with the weather (Aug), however, this did result in some of the hiking being rather more strenuous than anticipated as it was really warm most days - take lots of water! The trip was brilliant, highlights every day, but the bears (in the wild and at the sanctuary) definitely made the trip!!!Our guide, Thomas, couldn't have been more interesting (and funny) and extremely knowledgeable about the fauna, flora and history - simply the best!Villa Hermani was a hit too; friendly & helpful, good food and very reasonably priced drinks.Highly recommended trip.

5* A largely positive, interesting and varied trip, despite four seasons is a week
The walking was good, but maybe it was the varied other experiences and activities that made the trip more special. The visits to Bran Castle, the fortified church, the local "bar", Brasov. And of course the wildlife - the bears and the fire salamanders. Most exceeded expectations. The dip in the weather meant what were probably going to be the best hikes were not possible. I feel that some re-arranging of the itinerary might have benefitted us. Lovely and varied scenery, though. The guesthouse as a base was great, and we were well looked after. Hikes straight from the door are always a plus. As is unpacking and packing just once.

An overall excellent trip and most enjoyable holiday, made all the more so by the delightful company of fellow travellers at the hotel.  The hotel was beautifully situated in stunning scenery, and it was always a pleasure to return from a day out with a good appetite to enjoy a steaming bowl of soup and a tasty meal.

5* A vegan in Romania
A great trip that was as described in the trip notes, I felt the most relaxed I have felt on holiday. September is a good time to go as there is still some sun during the day & the leaves are starting to change. A great trip with a variety of walks and activities. The long hike through Coja & Pestara is particularly nice. The beech and pine forests were beautiful.

5* CARPATHIAN CULTURE AND WILDLIFE
An amazingly beautiful part of the world. Waking up to the view of rolling hills dotted with colourful houses and the more distant mountains covered with pine and beech forest was heart-lifting.

4* CARPATHIAN CULTURE AND WILDLIFE
This was my first group holiday with Exodus and I was travelling on my own, so hoping for a nice group of fellow travellers, plenty to do, good food and accommodation and well planned and executed travel arrangements.  This trip pretty much met all these expectations and exceeded some.  The actual walking part of the holiday was tough at times but manageable and certainly enjoyable (rain didn't help - but I can't blame Exodus for that).  Accommodation was simple but comfortable and everything worked.  Food was good.  The company (fellow travellers) were great and we really got on well.  The guide was great and overall it was a very good holiday.

4* Lots of bears
I enjoyed the walks although quite a proportion of the walking was on dirt tracks ( Romania doesn't appear to have much in the way of public rights of way over farm land)

5* Walking and Wildlife in a Stunning, Isolated Setting
This part of Romania is truly breath-taking. Nestled within the Carpathian Mountains, you will not come across any other tourists as you walk through incredible scenery, bumping into shepherds with their herds of sheep and goats, spotting yellow-bellied toads and seeing the odd bear paw-print. A visit to Dracula's Castle, the city of Brasov and the bear hide trip were all highlights as well, and it was a memorable trip that is recommended for those who like walking and wildlife.
