We explore the best of Somerset on this delightful short break. Take a nostalgic journey into yesteryear as we blend the charms of the Victorian seaside resort of Weston-super-Mare with the heritage of the West Somerset Railway, and the beauty of Regency Bath. We also discover the natural wonder of the awe-inspiring Cheddar Gorge on a scenic drive though the spectacular Somerset countryside.
We’ll stay at one of two hotels in Somerset:
The Wessex Hotel is situated in Street, set in the heart of historic Somerset. All the comfortable bedrooms are en-suite and hotel facilities include a bar and restaurant. (JG2+ rating)
The Mercure Bridgwater Hotel is set in the heart of the historic town of Bridgwater. The hotel offers contemporary rooms, a restaurant, bar and modern fitness suite. (JG3 rating) (2021 only)
Cheddar Gorge scenic drive, Cheddar Village & Weston-super-Mare (full day)
We enjoy a scenic drive through the magnificent limestone Cheddar Gorge. Classified as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Britain's largest gorge has dramatic cliffs rising up 450ft and stunning stalactite caverns. We arrive in Cheddar village, known as the origin of Cheddar cheese, which has been produced here since the 12th century. The village offers many tea rooms, gift shops and, of course, the Cheddar Cheese factory.
Afterwards, we head to the seaside resort of Weston-super-Mare where there is plenty to see and do. Here you can experience the traditional attractions, stroll along the long beach, enjoy an ice cream while discovering the refurbished pier or take in the picturesque views across the Bristol Channel.
West Somerset Railway & Minehead (full day)
We board the West Somerset Railway for a nostalgic journey stretching 20 miles from Bishops Lydeard to Minehead. Travelling through the gently rolling Quantock Hills, a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, we pass unspoilt villages and farms nestling in leafy lanes before following the cliffs and coast between Exmoor and the Bristol Channel with distant views of South Wales. We disembark in the traditional resort of Minehead with its promenade, long sandy beach and harbour, where we have some time to explore at leisure.
Bath (full day)
We enjoy some free time in the beautiful city of Bath. The city has remained faithful to its Regency roots, with an abundance of elegant terraces, circuses and squares in a picturesque valley setting. The magnificent Royal Crescent is a must-see and the central square is home not only to Bath Abbey, but also the ancient Roman Baths. The city has an excellent selection of shops; especially along the Pulteney Bridge, one of only four bridges in the world to feature shops across its full span on both sides.
