A dedicated Battlefields tour guide will accompany us on our included excursions and will give us all the information concerning the terrible trench warfare which took place, as well as explaining the methods and happenings of this part of the war.
We’ll visit a number of important locations relating to the Battle of the Somme, and will be based in Valenciennes at the Grand Hotel. This will provide us with an excellent base from which we can explore the local area, starting with our excursion to the battlefields of the Somme towards Peronne. Here, we’ll learn all about the battles that took place here, and will then visit the Historial de la Grande Guerre Museum (the Museum of the Great War).

Our next included excursion will be to the Arras and Albert areas of the Somme, where we’ll take a tour of the Somme 1916 Museum and its detailed recreations of scenes from the war.

Excursions

Full Day: Arras And Albert area (Included)

With our expert guide we explore key sites of the Arras and Albert areas including the Somme 1916 Museum in Albert, which shows scenes of trench life in World War I; the Arras Memorial, Vimy Ridge, an important strategic area; and the Canadian Memorial Park.

The Somme 1916 Museum is located within a tunnel that dates from the 13th century and which displays various weapons and items used by soldiers in the trenches to give us a greater understanding of what life would have been like for these men. Many scenes of trench-life have been recreated at the museum as well, including scenes of the winter months, first aid post and more.

Full Day: Peronne Area (Included)

With our expert guide we travel through the fields of the Somme to Peronne, where we visit key sites including the interesting Historial de la Grande Guerre Museum; Impressive Thiepval Memorial and moving Beaumont Hamel Newfoundland Memorial Park.

The Historial de la Grande Guerre Museum is dedicated to displaying the events of World War I, and includes artefacts and information relating to it. This will give us a better understanding of what happened during the Great War, including why it happened and how it was resolved.

Half Day: Ypres

We'll take a trip to Ypres today to explore this incredibly historical town in Belgium. Ypres is home to a great many fascinating sights, such as the 13th century Cloth Hall and Saint Martin’s Cathedral, which features remarkable Gothic architecture.
