We take an excursion to the attractive market town of Barnstaple, North Devon’s oldest and largest town, nestling in the Taw Valley. Take a walk up to the top of the mount that used to house Barnstaple Castle for a great view of the town and the River Taw winding its way towards the Bristol Channel. Alternatively the town’s museum is free to enter and houses a huge number of interesting items from the history of North Devon.
Enjoy a scenic drive through Exmoor National Park, calling at Dunster, a village steeped in medieval history with over 200 listed buildings. We return via the coastal village of Lynmouth.
The Dilkhusa Grand is perfectly situated hotel in the centre of the attractive town of Ilfracombe very close to the high street which has a number of fantastic independent shops, bars and restaurants.
Just across the road from the hotel are the wonderful Jubilee Gardens which contain the fascinating Ilfracombe Museum and the Landmark theatre. Or if you are feeling a bit more active head to the top of Capstone Parade, the cliff that overlooks town for great views back across Ilfracombe.
The town is perfectly situated between Exmoor and the North Devon Heritage coast, both of which have stunning coastal views and an amazing variety of wildlife across the two regions. Especially easy to reach by both bus and car is the quaint resort of Woolacombe which is famous for its vast and pretty sandy beach.

Days 2 to 4
Over the three full days we have in Ilfracombe we enjoy an included excursion. We take a trip to the bustling market town of Barnstaple. The town has a great food scene with fantastic seafood, which of course is all locally sourced. The Pannier Market is another highlight in the town, set within a beautiful market hall, it is a great place to pick up a souvenir of your visit.
We’ll also travel to Dartmoor, a wild and winding National Park, where you can feel real history in landscapes that haven’t changed in hundreds and sometimes thousands of years.
The other day is free for you to enjoy at your leisure in and around Ilfracombe. The town boasts fantastic seafood restaurants and a buzzing café culture, Lundy Island is close by and offers an opportunity to see puffins and seals or a short way down the coast is the beach at Woolacombe.
