The Iberian Peninsula has some incredible stories to share and we’ll begin with a stay in a 15th century palace, where you’ll follow the steps of Portuguese royalty. During your cruise, pay homage to great explorers of the Age of Discovery, follow the secret tunnels of Gibraltar, and taste tapas - all before we reach Barcelona. The groundbreaking creativity of this city is evident in a great collection of museums, concert halls and the unmistakable work of Antoni Gaudi.
Titan‘s VIP door-to-door travel service collects you from home for your flight to Lisbon. On arrival, we make the short transfer to our hotel in Paço de Arcos, the Vila Gale Palacio dos Arcos (4T+), with time to settle into your surroundings before we enjoy dinner this evening.
Enjoy the views of rural Portugal as we drive to Sintra, a pretty hillside town that has enticed many of Portugal‘s nobility. Exquisite mansions and palaces are in abundance and we take time to wander through Sintra National Palace, built as a Moorish Palace around a thousand years ago. It became the summer retreat for the Portuguese royal family for six centuries and its simple, white exterior conceals many ornately decorated state rooms.
Paço de Arcos offers opportunities to relax and explore. Your hotel is close to the train station, just a short journey from Lisbon, the Portuguese capital famous for its yellow trams, seafaring heritage and custard tarts.
After breakfast, we depart the hotel to embark Azamara Journey® (5T) and settle in before we begin our cruise.
The breathtaking scenery of Portimão includes Praia Grande, a stunning beach complete with a 16th century castle. Tour an award-winning winery, tee off at a championship golf course, experience the international race circuit, board a boat along the cave-ridden coast, dine on the freshest seafood you've ever tasted, or simply enjoy the ultimate Portuguese beach life.
Seville has a rich history evident in its landmarks, including a collection of glorious palaces, fortresses and gardens. The Alcazar, the main palace, is exquisitely decorated in Moorish style, with themed gardens laid out in terraces. It has made many appearances on TV screens with productions including Star Wars and Game of Thrones. The city‘s Gothic cathedral is considered the world‘s largest church, and is certainly resplendent with gold and Gothic woodcarvings, a suitable resting place for the great explorer, Christopher Columbus. Remember to take a break from the medieval lanes to join the locals as they graze in a tapas bar.
Overlooking the mouth of the Mediterranean Sea from a height of more than 425m, the towering Rock of Gibraltar is a natural fortress in a strategic position to control all naval traffic between the Mediterranean and the Atlantic. Take time to explore the extensive War Tunnels within the Rock, or climb up through the nature reserve, pausing to explore St Michael‘s Cave and meet the Barbary macaques, for great views over to Spain and Africa from the top.
A modern city with a long story, Palma‘s rich history is yours to explore. Architecture admirers can visit the Cathedral of Santa Maria of Palma, a Gothic Roman Catholic cathedral that has stood for nearly 800 years. For nature lovers, don‘t miss the Caves of Drach, where strange rock formations reflect in one of the world‘s largest underground lakes.
Olde-world charm meets modern architectural genius in Valencia. Gothic riches abound in the palaces and mansions of a 15th century golden age. The cathedral has a more recent, and opulent, baroque façade, and the Silk Exchange sports an exterior resembling a medieval fortress and a main hall filled with palm-tree shaped columns and enigmatic carvings.
Those who enjoy architecture will love the magnificent medieval buildings of Barcelona‘s Gothic Quarter and the Modernist movement - the work of Antoni Gaudi is scattered through the city and you can easily fill your day visiting these alone. His masterpiece is the amazing Church of the Sagrada Familia, colossal and as yet unfinished, though construction began in 1882.
Disembark and transfer to the airport for your return flight to the UK. Upon arrival, your Titan vehicle will be waiting for the journey home.
