  • Antigua

Day: 2-3

Today you make your way across the border into El Salvador and head south to Suchitoto, a reminder of El Salvador's historical past. A beautiful town with painted houses and cobbled streets, it's a world away from the modern country which El Salvador is today. The town overlooks the Embalse Cerron Grande, also known as Lago Suchitlan, a reservoir which is a haven for migrating birds, particularly falcons and hawks. The following day is free for optional activities such as boat or kayaking trips on Lago Suchitlan or forest hiking.

  • Suchitoto

Day: 4

Heading south today, you pass through the nation's capital San Salvador, and head for the beautiful beaches of El Tunco. Here you'll find a rare side to El Salvador, a place so laid-back and relaxed you'll never want to leave! Grab a fresh fruit smoothie, try the street food (especially a pupusa) and watch sunset over the black sand beach, for the perfect end to this awesome day.

  • El Tunco

Day: 5-6

El Cuco is a beach town with dark sand, lined with vendor huts, delicious seafood restaurants and surrounding palms. Spend two nights in a beautiful eco-hotel and take time to enjoy the beach away from the crowds. Kayak among the mangroves, give surfing a go, or just relax in a hammock. This is beach life at its best!

  • El Cuco

Day: 7

After an early transfer to La Union you'll take a boat through the Gulf of Fonseca to the Nicaraguan town of Potosi. Once you've had your passport checked, the group will continue by private vehicle to Leon. It’s a long old journey today but the end point is entirely worth it! Nicaragua is a beautiful place and for many people it becomes their favourite country in Central America with its friendly people and impressive natural beauty. The country has flourished in recent years and is an incredibly vibrant and unique country. This city is buzzing with energy and with its faded decadence and crumbling buildings you are sure to fall in love with this city. Spend time walking around exploring the ornate churches, people watching from the street cafes, eating good food and enjoying the nightlife.

  • Leon

Day: 8-9

Oozing with colonial charm, Granada is the oldest city of the 'New World', having been founded in 1524. The city resides on the banks of Lake Nicaragua and its appearance is a mixture of Moorish and Andalusian. Wander the cobblestone streets surrounded by colourful buildings and bargain hard in the markets.  The surrounding countryside includes active volcanoes and lakes so you can hike, cruise and explore the neighbouring landscapes. Opt for a day trip out to Mombacho or Masaya Volcano National Park to get up close to some steaming giants. There really is so much to do, you won't know where to start!

  • Granada

Day: 10-11

Next stop is the agricultural island of Ometepe which sits in the largest lake in Central America - Lake Nicaragua. This is a simply breathtaking experience and will bring you closer to the wildlife and volcanic landscapes of this remarkable country. If you can't get enough of that volcanic stuff then there are more optional hikes available up the side of both Maderas and Concepcion. After all that huffing and puffing, a trip to the Ojo de Agua springs is the place to be after a hard day exploring!

  • Ometepe Island

Day: 12-13

Wave farewell to the monkeys and beaches of Ometepe Island as you continue your travels south to the lush green cloud forests of Monteverde, Costa Rica. This is home to hundreds of species of plants, birds and mammals which means that however you choose to explore - by foot, bike or zip line - you'll be in for a really wild time. There are so many additional ways to enjoy the gorgeous landscapes of Monteverde and from cloud forest walks to night-time nature rambles, this is an exciting and captivating area of Costa Rica. From coffee and chocolates to butterflies and insects - you name it and you'll have the opportunity to discover more.

  • Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve

Day: 14-15

Monkeys, lakes and volcanoes - oh my! This is what the active Arenal Volcano is all about. This is pretty much an adventure playground for big kids and if you're interested in hiking an active volcano or canyoneering then where better to give it a go than here? This is also the perfect place to rest your bones in the hot springs and relax. Costa Rica has it all!

  • La Fortuna
  • Arenal Volcano National Park

Day: 16-17

Do you know the way to San Jose? You most certainly do! Take your time to relax and explore amongst the artisan markets and cultural museums of Costa Rica's capital city. Touring with TrekAmerica

TrekAmerica was founded 45 years ago, on a simple concept; get together a group of free-wheeling, independent types, pack up a van with tents, camping gear and a trek leader and follow the road, hitting all the key places along the way. Today, not much has changed, and as the longest running North American, small group tour company, they are proud to say no-one knows the area like them. With ‘Tours for Non-Tourists’, they love bringing together small groups of young, international travellers to experience the best of USA, Canada, Alaska and South America; showing them America's big highlights from bustling cities to jaw-dropping National Parks, and incredible places so hidden only locals like them know about them.

TrekAmerica tours are designed specifically for young, international travellers aged 18-38, so you're guaranteed to be travelling with people of a similar age, all with a sense of fun, adventure and a keen desire to explore. Whether you're travelling alone or with friends, you'll soon be surrounded by like-minded people who will quickly become your new best trek mates. The tour leaders are home-grown, knowledgeable and fun loving folks with a passion for showing you the real Americas. Only the most enthusiastic and committed people are chosen to become tour leaders; they are trained extensively as TrekAmerica believe that the most important ingredient for the success of a tour is a great leader.

With year round departures and over 50 unique itineraries from 3 days to 3 months in length, TrekAmerica offer a wide range of tours and departures and whatever you choose they guarantee you the experience of a lifetime! Each trip offers fantastic value for money; they include all accommodation and transport, your own experienced tour leader, all national park fees and selected meals on some tours. Plus there are no single supplements for those travelling alone. They also include exciting activities along the way so you get serious ‘bang for your buck’. You have a choice of accommodation on each tour; you can opt for full on communing with nature with the camping option, or go the hostel route of group accommodation with the Budget Lodging option, or if you need your creature comforts, the Plus option is for you.

Whichever tour you choose, fun, freedom and flexibility are key to TrekAmerica’s style of travel and with interests as individual as their travellers, you're able to hang out with the group when you want or do your own thing. In addition to the many included highlights and activities, there are also lots of optional activities for you to choose from during your trip. They keep these optional so you have the flexibility to do the things you want to and leave out the things you don't, according to taste and budget.
