Head into the wild and rugged landscapes of North America's 49th State and what better place to start than the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Wrangell-St Elias National Park. Cruise past the massive Matanuska Glacier and down the McCarthy Road towards an incredible national park that's home to the continent's largest assemblage of glaciers and peaks above 16,000 ft. Prepare yourself for some top-notch glacier action with an included half day hiking trip on Root Glacier, or for a more vertical challenge, grab an axe and try your hand at some ice climbing. Spend the night in a wilderness camp overlooking the glacier as you sit around the campfire, just don't forget the s'mores! Melted chocolate and marshmallow sandwiched between two crackers over the fire, perfection!
Take the scenic route along the Alaskan Mountain Range, crossing the famous 1300km long Alaskan pipeline. The Tangle Lakes are your next spot and a perfect spot to chill out. If you're feeling active, some wilderness canoeing beneath the mountain scenery should do the trick; getting out on the water is also a great way to see this stunning place in all its glory. Keep an eye out for those cheeky beavers!
Surrounded by the tallest mountain peaks in North America, Denali National Park is so large that the only way of getting around is by bus (or small aircraft!). Lucky for you, we've thrown in a 2 day pass so you can get out into the wilds and explore the best this enormous expanse has to offer. The rangers even encourage you to stray off the path and become your own guide. Watch out for Grizzly Bear, caribou and Dall Sheep which roam in the park. You can't go anywhere without your camera at the ready as there is so much to see and experience from an included dog sled demonstration to the mighty Mount Denali that dominates the park's landscape. For a different perspective, why not take an optional helicopter flight with the chance to land on an ice sheet in the shadows of this impressive mountain? This is once in a lifetime stuff and we promise the views alone will blow you away.
Follow the Cook Inlet to Resurrection Bay and the coastal town of Seward, known for its stunning mountain scenery and unbeatable views of the bay. Jump aboard an included guided cruise of the Kenai Fjords (with lunch included) and be prepared to be awestruck at the sheer beauty of this place! Throughout the cruise you'll have plenty of opportunities to spot some amazing marine and birdlife such as whales, sea lions, otters and puffins. One thing that can't be caught on camera is the noise coming from the glaciers as they creak and sometimes fall into the sea creating a mighty splash. Back on land, lace up your hiking boots and follow the Harding Icefield Trail beside a glacier, all the way to the top. Our tour leaders often rate this as one of their favourite hikes and you'll no doubt feel the same way!
Head to Homer, located at stunning Kachemak Bay on the Kenai Peninsula. It's fair to say there'll never be a dull moment in Homer as it's surrounded by wilderness and ocean so there are heaps of activities to keep you entertained. The glacier-crafted spit and its invigorating beach walks are the perfect warm up for a hearty and delicious dinner of ultra-fresh halibut - prepared by yours truly! If you don't know the first thing about preparing fish, don't panic as your tour leader is on hand to give advice on cooking your fresh fish dinner, so you won't go hungry! Homer is most famous for its wildlife and bear viewing opportunities so make the most of this and join a dedicated bear viewing tour.
As you cross to the other side of the peninsula, the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge awaits you. The refuge is a whopping network of lands and water that's almost 2 million acres in size and protects some of North America's most iconic wildlife, including Brown Bears, Black Bears, moose and caribou, as well as thousands of birds. This place is full to the brim with outdoor adventures. Why not try your hand at rafting, keeping a keen eye out for moose grazing by the shore and eagles flying high above you?

TrekAmerica was founded 45 years ago, on a simple concept; get together a group of free-wheeling, independent types, pack up a van with tents, camping gear and a trek leader and follow the road, hitting all the key places along the way. Today, not much has changed, and as the longest running North American, small group tour company, they are proud to say no-one knows the area like them. With ‘Tours for Non-Tourists’, they love bringing together small groups of young, international travellers to experience the best of USA, Canada, Alaska and South America; showing them America's big highlights from bustling cities to jaw-dropping National Parks, and incredible places so hidden only locals like them know about them.
TrekAmerica tours are designed specifically for young, international travellers aged 18-38, so you're guaranteed to be travelling with people of a similar age, all with a sense of fun, adventure and a keen desire to explore. Whether you're travelling alone or with friends, you'll soon be surrounded by like-minded people who will quickly become your new best trek mates. The tour leaders are home-grown, knowledgeable and fun loving folks with a passion for showing you the real Americas. Only the most enthusiastic and committed people are chosen to become tour leaders; they are trained extensively as TrekAmerica believe that the most important ingredient for the success of a tour is a great leader.
With year round departures and over 50 unique itineraries from 3 days to 3 months in length, TrekAmerica offer a wide range of tours and departures and whatever you choose they guarantee you the experience of a lifetime! Each trip offers fantastic value for money; they include all accommodation and transport, your own experienced tour leader, all national park fees and selected meals on some tours. Plus there are no single supplements for those travelling alone. They also include exciting activities along the way so you get serious ‘bang for your buck’. You have a choice of accommodation on each tour; you can opt for full on communing with nature with the camping option, or go the hostel route of group accommodation with the Budget Lodging option, or if you need your creature comforts, the Plus option is for you.
Whichever tour you choose, fun, freedom and flexibility are key to TrekAmerica’s style of travel and with interests as individual as their travellers, you're able to hang out with the group when you want or do your own thing. In addition to the many included highlights and activities, there are also lots of optional activities for you to choose from during your trip. They keep these optional so you have the flexibility to do the things you want to and leave out the things you don't, according to taste and budget.
