Sample the majestic Moorish cities and the white villages of Andalucia, Spain.

Andalucia is one of the greatest ethnic melting pots of the Mediterranean and the westernmost meeting place of past civilisations including the Greeks, the Phoenicians, Carthaginians and Romans. It was the sophisticated Moslem kingdom, 'Al Andalus', however, that gave the region its richest and most lasting cultural heritage and distinctive traditions. From the magic cities of Seville and Granada to the secret gem of Antequera and the timeless white villages of Olvera and Setenil, there is a wealth of culture to indulge in. Taking advantage of a comfortable base, Cortijo Rosario, and a private minibus, the journey combines some great cultural highlights with the peace and tranquillity of the Andalusian countryside.   *Temporary changes due to COVID-security measures. * *Last updated: 22/07/2020*   At Exodus we acknowledge our responsibility to have the most up to date information on anything that will affect our customers on holiday, and to communicate this to our customers as effectively as possible. Day 1 : Fly to Malaga; transfer to Cortijo Rosario, Algamitas.

Fly to Malaga and transfer to Cortijo Rosario, located in the heart of the authentic Andalucian countryside, approximately 100km from Malaga. Our converted farmhouse is just a short walk from Algamitas, a peaceful and traditional village far from the hustle and bustle of the big towns or cities. Contrary to many other travel companies, we have decided to select a rural base for our discovery trip as we believe this gives the chance to experience the real Spain, whilst still offering easy access to the top tourist attractions and best Andalucian towns such as Olvera, Setenil, Seville and Antequera, which we'll visit during the week. **

Meals: dinner

Day 2 : Half-day guided walk through nearby hills and olive groves of Algamitas.

Today we take a half-day guided walk on the trails and paths around the Cortijo. The countryside surrounding Algamitas is picture-perfect, covered with olive trees, beautiful farmland and rolling hills. During the walk, our leader will give us a good overview of the rural lifestyle and traditions of this part of the world, which are largely based around the production of olive oil. The route is very flexible and can be tailored to suit changes in the weather. The afternoon will be spent relaxing by the pool or enjoying a drink in the lovely outdoor terrace at the Cortijo. We then have dinner and overnight at the Cortijo.

Meals: breakfast,dinner

Day 3 : Marvel at beautiful Moorish and 'Mudejar' architecture and enjoy the gardens of Seville; overnight in Seville.

In the morning, we transfer by private minibus to the magnificent city of Seville. The day is free to sightsee at our own pace. Now the capital of Andalucia, Seville was one of the first conquests of the Moors. After the fall of the Cordoba Caliphate in the 11th Century, under whose direction it previously lay, it became the most powerful city in Al Andalus. Near the city centre is the evocative Giralda, an architectural masterpiece dating back to the 12th Century. Originally built as a minaret for the central Mosque in Seville, this mosque was later destroyed, and it is now the bell-tower for the enormous cathedral. Close by is the magnificent Alcazar, a complex of palaces dating back from Roman times and later used by both Moorish and Christian rulers. It has fine examples of Moorish and Mudejar architecture, rivalling that of Granada's 'Alhambra', and has some lovely gardens. After the Christian re-conquest Seville became the gateway to the 'New World'; Christopher Columbus negotiated here with Queen Isabella to fund his epic voyage to the Americas.

Meals: breakfast,

Day 4 : To the white Moorish villages of Andalucia; visit Olvera and Setenil; return to the Cortijo.

Leaving Seville in the morning, we travel to Olvera, one of the most scenic of the 'pueblos blancos' or white villages. These villages were built during Moorish times as a border between what was then 'Al Andalus' and Christian Spain. In Olvera we have the opportunity to visit the Arab castle, which dates back to the end of the 12th Century. From here we head to Seteni de las Bodegas. Built under the overhanging ledge of a gorge, Setenil is not only famous for its peculiar architecture but also for its bars, restaurants and food shops which are ranked as the best in the region. The town is also a good place to buy ceramics and local crafts. We return to the Cortijo and the rest of the afternoon is free for a dip in the pool or walks in the surrounding countryside.

Meals: breakfast,dinner

Day 5 : Free day: explore the countryside around the farmhouse or visit Ronda or Cordoba.

Today we enjoy a free day to explore the tranquil countryside around the farmhouse or take an optional self-guided walk to a nearby village for lunch. Alternatively, it is also possible to visit Ronda or beautiful Cordoba. Train connections to these towns are limited, but your leader can help you to arrange some private return transfers locally (they do not need to be pre-booked before departure).

Meals: breakfast,dinner

Day 6 : Full day in Granada. Visit to the Alhambra; free time to explore the city; overnight in Granada.

We leave the Cortijo today and transfer to the beautiful Moorish city of Granada. Here we spend a full day exploring the wonderful heritage of the historic centre. After an optional orientation walk in the morning arranged by our leader, we visit the Alhambra, indisputably the best-known monument and one of the most visited in Spain. The entrance ticket is included in the cost of the trip and will be arranged by Exodus upon booking. However please be aware that for reservations made less than 90 days prior to departure, there may be a supplement to pay to guarantee entrance as ticket numbers are limited. We will be able to check this upon booking and confirm the amount of the supplement if it applies. The remainder of the day is free to sightsee at our own pace: visit the Palacio Nazaríe, the most brilliant Islamic building in Europe, take a panoramic view of the city at sunset from the famous Mirador San Nicolas or simply enjoy some tapas and wine in the cosy town's streets. After immersing ourselves in Granada’s history and culture by day, there is a lot to do and see at night including optional flamenco shows.

Meals: breakfast,

Day 7 : To the white village of Antequera; short walk in El Torcal Natural Reserve; transfer back to the Cortijo.

Leaving Granada, we head to the historical town of Antequera, a little gem known as "the heart of Andalucia” because of its geographical location. The town's history dates back 5,000 years, beginning with the Bronze Age and successively inhabited by many cultures including the native Iberians, Romans and the Moors, all of which have left their mark for us. After exploring the town's highlights and great variety of monuments, we enjoy a delicious lunch in a typical local restaurant. In the afternoon we make our way to the nearby Natural Reserve of El Torcal where we enjoy a short easy walk which offers stunning panoramic views of the landscape below. The karst rock formations found here are unique and among the most important in Europe. Later we make our way back to the Cortijo, where we enjoy a delicious farewell dinner.

Meals: breakfast,dinner

Day 8 : To Malaga; fly to London.

Transfer to Malaga airport and fly to London. **

Authentic Andalucia

Just back from a fantastic trip. Was great to be based in the Spanish countryside. The Cortijo is such a lovely, relaxing, chilled place. Good mix of places visited on the itinerary. To bring in the New Year in Seville was a special experience. There wasn’t a place visited that I wouldn’t want to return to. Indeed I’d happily do the whole trip again. We were fortunate to have a week of blue skies and sunshine.

A wonderful trip

Cortijo Rosario is a fantastic base for a holiday in Andalusia. The itinerary includes some local walking as well as trips to Seville, Granada and a few wonderful pueblos blancos. As we joined our holiday to the "Walking in Adalusia" trip which followed on we had an extra day on the Saturday and so ventured to Cordova with the help of transport arranged for us by Michael. We heartily recommend doing the double week; there is very little overlap and the emphasis of the second week was quite different from the first. Michael was a great leader; enthusiastic, knowledgeable and helpful and after two weeks the Cortijo felt like home.

Authentic Andalucia

I'd always wanted to visit these iconic Spanish cities and wasn't disappointed. Seville and Granada were both great and we also managed to fit in both Cordoba (see below) and Ronda. If it's possible to do both of these options make the effort, they are both really worthwhile.

Authentic Andalucia

We had a fantastic week expolring Andalucia. The Cortijo is great, except for the bed. Really uncomfortable and rickety (Room 2) - we both came back with sore backs. The only decent sleep we got were the two nights in hotels. The rest of the facilities are fab though. Word of warning about the food at the cortijo- if you are a goody don't raise your hopes. Some was good but most was acceptable fuel for the day. And the paella finale was all about the looks and nothing about the taste. But that's being picky because the trip notes etc really big up the food. Sliced packet bread, processed cheese and desserts that are bought as powders and mixed with milk or vienetta gives you the context. The sun loungers and pool were very welcome at the end of the day. The programme was great, so much to see and do. We certainly weren't bored. Apart from the afternoon of day 2, there is very little chill time. That was fine for us but worth mentioning. We took naps on the minibus to catch up on sleep as the transfers are between 1-2 hours. Stunning scenery, fantastic history and history. Highly recommended.

Well chosen highlights of Andalucia

Well-chosen highlights of the Andalucia region and good mix of hiking, countryside and city. We had such a fantastic group of people and leader that the trip would have been wonderful in any event. But it was also well-designed and organized by Exodus. Only negative was that the accommodations at the Cortijo are basic. We had a small room facing the back with no view. The bed was too small for us so they squeezed a twin mattress into the room. So it was quite cramped. The setting is lovely which mostly offset this deficit since not much time is spent in the Cortijo. If one is fortunate to get a larger room with a view it would be a nicer experience.

A Golden Wedding Annivesary treat

It would be have been very easy to spend a leisurely week at Cortijo Rosario enjoying the countryside, the ambiance of the villa and the pool. Indeed the location is stunning and the villa very homely but there is far more to Andalusia than farmhouses swallows and olive groves. The itinerary is flexible but it would be foolish not to take the inclusive excursions to both Seville and Granada, these take up the best part of four days and cover the finest aspects of Moorish architecture and culture in both these cities with exciting interludes en-route including the equally interesting sights of Olvera, Sentenil, Antequera and the El Torcal NP.

Authentic Andalucia

We saw the highlights of Andalucia, drank a lot of wine and ate a lot of tapas. And good company every day. Holy Week made it extra interesting and there are many towns we wouldn't know existed, some real gems.

Authentic Andalucia

This was an excellent opportunity to see Spanish Culture at first hand, we were lucky with the weather and the tour leader was very good and knowledgeable. Extra trip to Cordoba has to be done. The whole break was well organised and I would recommend to anyone wanting to see Andalucía. Only downside there is a lot of minibus travel at least 1.5/2hours away from base each day and the Conjita Farmhouse is a bit tired, otherwise, with this in mind I recommend it.
